It’s difficult to drive into Fountain Inn and not notice the comically large measuring tape on the corner of Fairview Street and Main. That identifiable landmark sits out front of Burdette’s Hardware store. Established in 1899 by the Burdette family, this small-town hardware store has become much more than a place to buy tools and supplies; it is a gathering spot for locals and a symbol of the strong community spirit that defines Fountain Inn. Â
Connor McCraw grew up sweeping the aisles, taking out the trash and running the cash register, of his dad and uncle’s store. His girlfriend Dusti at the time (now wife), would wait for him to close-up the shop before they could go out on dates in the evening. When moving back to Fountain Inn after graduating from Clemson University with a Bachelors of Science in Economics with a minor in Accounting, Connor began working at Atlantic Supply. But he and Dusti kept feeling pulled into the direction of the family business. In spring of 2018, he and Dusti together, decided to purchase the store.
Keeping it Personal
Despite the growth of big-box stores and online retailers, Burdette's has managed to maintain its reputation for providing high-quality, personalized service that larger stores often can't match. One of the defining characteristics of Burdette's is its customer service. Long-time employees are known for their expertise, offering practical advice and tips to customers on everything from minor repairs to major renovations. This dedication to service has earned Burdette's a loyal following, with many residents considering it a one-stop shop for all their household and project needs. Whether it's helping a first-time homebuyer pick out tools or offering advice on landscaping, the staff at Burdette's has built lasting relationships with customers over the decades.
Family Dedication is Key to Success
Over the years, the store has been passed down through generations, and the family’s dedication to its roots remains evident in its operations. The store's longevity is a testament to the importance of community-based businesses in small-town America, where personal connections and quality service continue to outshine the convenience of online shopping.
As Fountain Inn continues to grow and evolve, Burdette’s Hardware Store remains a vital part of its history and future. It stands as a reminder that some businesses, through hard work, dedication, and a focus on community, can thrive in an ever-changing retail landscape. For the people of Fountain Inn, Burdette’s is not just a place to buy hardware—it's a place where memories are made, advice is shared, and the spirit of small-town life endures.
